Manitoba Great Wall
Performing Arts Inc. is an independent non-profit amateur
cultural performance organization. Its membership consists of
local Chinese immigrants, Chinese-Canadian citizens and student
volunteers who share a common interest in the Chinese performing
arts and are dedicated to community growth.
The
organization has been established to achieve the following
goals: a) communicate and promote Chinese culture and arts
across Canadian multi-cultural groups; b) enrich overseas
Chinese cultural life; c) strengthen the Chinese ethnic identity
and community; and d) contribute to the linkage between mainland
and overseas Chinese through performing arts. It further aims to
promote culture and art exchanges with other ethnic groups,
enhance friendly relations with those groups, and raise
awareness of Chinese culture and arts in the Canadian
multi-cultural context.
Since its
inception in July 2002, the organization has organized a number
of performance events for major Chinese cultural occasions.
These events have attracted significant attention and praise
from the general public as well as from within the Chinese
community. The organization has also participated in Canada's
annual Asian Heritage Month activities, contributed to the
Indo-China Chinese performances at the internationally renowned
annual Winnipeg Folklorama festivities, and performed in
seniors' nursing homes, schools, churches, and other local
community group. By its popular Moon Festival and New-Year
performance celebrations, the organization has earned a
reputation for its talents and passions--as the local Chinese
community's cultural ambassador to Winnipeg's cultural mosaic.
Over the years, the organization has committed to a constant
renewal of its repertoire. Many of its classic pieces - "Outing
Song", "The Grapes Are Ripe in Tulufan", "Charming Cantonese
Maidens" and "Ethnic Fashion Show" have left deep impressions on
the audiences. Behind the scenes and stages, the organization is
at present a hundred members and volunteers strong, forming and
supporting the dance, fashion, instrument, and vocal sub-groups.
The organization
recognizes that its success lies in the support from various
concerned public organizations and private businesses as well as
the dedication of the performers and volunteers. It hopes to see
more talented and enthusiastic people join its current members
and volunteers and share in their vision of the promotion of
Chinese culture and arts in Canada.
